Para conversar:
It is an ice-breaking activity that you will carry out during the first 5 minutes of every class, starting the first week. You will use a list of questions from the chapter being discussed to go around and get answers from your classmates; those who answer sign the list. They will be collected at the end of each chapter. Your initiative to find a partner and getting started without being reminded are part of your participation grade. Click on the links below to print out the appropriate list. BRING IT EVERYDAY.

Workbook (Manual):
Workbook assignments that correspond with the work in class are indicated in the syllabus. These exercises will be valuable to practice for quizzes and tests. To help you check your work, there is an answer key at the end of the Workbook. Please, make sure to use a different color-ink when checking your work. You are not required to turn these in, but some days I may ask for them at random during class; be prepared for that; it is part of your grade.

Compositions:
You will have to write two (2) compositions outside of class. They must be printed out and turned in to the instructor in the classroom by a deadline noted in your syllabus with the following indications:
• a typed Word Document (font size 12, double spaced)
• your complete name, date and name of class
• a minimum of 150 words to a maximum of 200 words
You may use the Composition Correction Guide Rubric and the Lista de horrores to help you in your writing. When I correct your compositions, I will use this list of symbols to help you with your errors. I suggest that you edit your composition afterwards. If you want a better grade, you will have two extra days to turn in your edited version from the day you get it back.

Conversation “Diarios” (Partner Activity):
You will choose a conversation partner the first week of class. You will meet off-class three (3) times throughout the semester to discuss in Spanish a given topic for at least 30 minutes. Topics and due dates are noted in the syllabus.
Each time you will write in your ‘Blue Book’ a summary of what you both shared by comparing and contrasting your views. It ought to show evidence of critical thinking, and deep engagement in order to receive full credit. You MUST write at least one and a half pages, and a maximum of three pages, skipping lines. Diario assignments not written in the blue book will be heavily penalized.
The Diarios are an excellent opportunity to practice conversation and writing in Spanish in a non-threatening environment. The written part of the assignment will be graded on content rather than form, unless grammatical errors make the content incomprehensible. Since grammar is not penalized, this is an important opportunity to challenge yourself linguistically. Errors will be corrected using the same format as the compositions (list of symbols).

Oral Presentations:
You will conduct two (2) oral presentations. One will be a short one indicated as Cuentacuentos in the syllabus, and the other is a longer one found in the syllabus as Presentación final. The Cuentacuentos will be presented individually, and the Presentación final will be a group project (2 or 3 per group). The group presentation will be on a topic chosen at random by you related to one of the countries studied during class. Use Power Point (you cannot use fully written text, only words or an outline). Students will sign up for a specific date for the presentation during the last two months of classes. Click here to print out the evaluation sheet and bring it to class.

In-Class Chatting (BBS):
You will be able to chat with the other classmates through using a Bulletin Board System (BBS) in the LRC. This language forum will allow you to read and discuss on a given topic. You will have two (2) sessions during the semester. In order to use it, you must register prior to our first session. Follow the steps shown in the following web-site.
If you have questions regarding registration, visit the page of “FAQ”.

Tell Me More (TMM):
There will be three (3) exercises using TMM to be done only in the LRC. Tell Me More is a software program designed to help you with many facets of learning a language, especially your speaking skills. This software can only be accessed in the LRC at Rice. If you want to know more about it, visit this link.
When you have an assignment in TMM, allow yourself ample time to complete the assignment according to LRC hours of operation. TMM assignments must be completed before class time on the due dates noted in the syllabus.
Topics:
"Ir a un concierto" (nivel intermedio)
"Preparar una cena" (nivel intermedio)
"La correspondencia" (nivel intermedio +)
For each topic, you are required to complete at least the following four activities: Dialogue, Sentence Pronunciation, Picture/Word Association, and Dictation.
Because you are working in the "Free to Roam Mode" the maximum percentage you can receive for completed work for Dialogue and Picture/Word Association is 50%. For some of the lessons, it may be 25%.
The grade you receive in TMM is based on completion. I have access to your detailed records, and am able to see all sentences and parts of exercises you complete as well as hear everything you record. I assign your grades based on the detailed records and not on the percentage completed.
You will create your TMM account during the LRC orientation. Your username is your first name SPACE last name, and your password is your Rice ID number. (If you already have created your account for another Spanish class, use the same account). DO NOT change your username and password after the account is created or your work will not be able to be accessed by the teacher. If you were absent during the LRC orientation, use the above instructions to create your account.
Note: Please, always sign out in the LRC Usage Log after completing your assignment. This is very useful for their budget.

To view the movies click here; go to Course Reserve Collection, and enter the password that you will receive in class. Please plan your time wisely and check the hours that the LRC is open in order to have time to watch the movies before the class discussion.
