Disability Based Accommodations
Important
Observations
In order to better profit
from your Portuguese 102 course, it is absolutely necessary to follow some
important guidelines.
This is what I expect from
each student in Portuguese 102:
TEXTBOOK
·
We will dedicate an
average of four classes to each of the units in our textbook, Brasil! Língua e
Cultura.
·
Every unit in the book is
presented in a uniform fashion, which contributes to better use our time in
class. Each lesson contains several
grammar sections, exercises to be done in class, readings and themes for
composition
Ø
You should always know
what is expected of you and when it is due, so if you are absent on any given
day, it is your responsibility to find out what the assignment is
and the due date. There
should not be any late work, unless under extreme circumstances.
Ø
Three unexcused absences
will result in the drop of your final grade by one.
Ø
The English explanation of
a new grammar item is to be studied before coming to class. Class time is dedicated to speaking
the language, which can be very productive and a lot of fun.
Ø
The texts in Portuguese as
well as in English are
also to be read in advance so we can talk about them in
Portuguese.
Ø
In your syllabus you will
find the page for redação
in each lesson, starting with lesson 9. Please turn it in at any day up to
and including the last day on that lesson, that is to say, before we start a
new unit.
·
CADERNO (writing/lab manual) is an extremely
important part of your learning Portuguese.
Ø
It is part of
your grade
Ø
In your Caderno de Trabalho e Laboratório
there are several exercises corresponding to the lesson in the textbook, and
must be done in order to better further your knowledge of the language.
Ø
It is advisable to
complete the pages relative to the pages studied in our textbook as we advance,
not at the end of the semester. Experience has shown that the students who have
planned and complied with the expectations showed wonderful results in the
understanding, speaking, reading and writing of Portuguese in a rather short
time.
Ø
Please turn in your
workbook for corrections every ten pages or less. I am happy to correct all of your work, but it
must be in small installments so my work also does not seem insurmountable.
Remember that only the last ten pages will be corrected. I keep a record of
your work and it will be included in your grade.
Ø
PLAN THE DATES FOR TURNING IN YOUR WORKBOOK DURING THE
SEMESTER.
·
LABORATÓRIO (writing/lab manual)
Ø
It is part of
your grade
Ø
A total of 20 hours of lab
is the minimum required for the semester in the following practices:
Ø
The lab section in your Caderno de
Trabalho can be done at the LRC or from your computer at home logging on www.LinguatextLtd.com.
You must
keep a log of your hours through the LRC https://lang.rice.edu/apps/log/logusage.html
(LRC Student Log-in) and state what you did
during that time, so your instructor can check each Monday and include that
in your grades. Of course, the more
hours you spend listening and practicing, the better you will be in your proficiency
in Portuguese.
Ø
Atividade pela Internet is part of each
lesson. In your syllabus you have
website suggestions for each lesson according to the subjects. Make sure you
write in your logging what you have learned.
You will find many interesting things about Brasil, its people, history,
culture, present and past. There are several more Brazilian websites to
choose from listed in the syllabus. Explore them, and write about your findings
in your lab logging. It is also valuable to all of us in Portuguese 102 if you
share new findings either in class or through e-mail (preferably in Portuguese,
of course).
Ø
Beginning
Brazilian Portuguese,
a program for interactive learning of the language, is available in the
LRC. It is easy to use and can be
another source for your lab hours.
Ø
The
videos available in the LRC and in Fondren Library
are an excellent complement to your knowledge of Portuguese and Brasil. Some of
them are in English, some are in Portuguese with subtitles, but most are in
Portuguese, so watch them as many times as necessary to fully understand, and
also take notes and write your comments in your lab logging. The videos are one more source for the 2
credits you receive as lab hours.
Ø
The LRC has a link to news from Rede Globo in
Grupo Solo
Brasil – 100 anos de música brasileira – this collection is part of our
study of Brazilian music and culture. It is also part of your lab hours for the
semester. You will find it in the LRC. We have permission from the producer to
download in our IPods using password, or to listen to online also using
password. This is material for
