TESTING
There will be two tests (covering two chapters
each) and five vocabulary quizzes (if time permits).
The tests ...
- No books
will be used or any extra help like dictionaries (including online or
the one within Microsoft Word), books or class notes. You
are allowed to use spell-check and grammar-check in your computer or
the LRC,
though.
- You will
have a week to complete this online exam with
the exact deadline detailed in our class schedule. Please, don't wait
until
the last minute just in case you encounter any problems.
- The time
for the test will be 30 minutes, unless otherwise indicated. You can
take 5 initial minutes to plan your exam and 5 final minutes to
correct it (that is a total of 40 minutes).
- Here you
can download a sample of a test in
Word for your conveniance (or see a pdf
version). This is the paper version but still you can see the kind of
questions you will get.
- Answer ONLY one question.
- The exams
will be graded according to this form.
Vocabulary quizzes
...
will be always taken in class.
You
will be asked on the words included in the vocabulary sections of each
chapter of the textbook and occasionally on some important concepts
which were mentioned in class. Some of the words included in the
vocabulary may
not be as useful as others and may be dropped from the list. The
instructor will let you know by email and/or in class about these words
to be excluded from the quizzes. Download
a sample of a quiz (or see a pdf
version). Feel free to use this on-line dictionary (or any
other) in order to be better prepared for the quizzes (remember we deal
with
definitions all the time).
We
may use Wiki to work on
the definitions for the quiz. There you will find the list of words to
study and their
definitions. Feel free to contribute with your corrections or additions
to this collaborative work.
There
will be no make-up tests or quizzes without proof of a serious
emergency. As stated in the Rice catalogue, an instructor is not under
obligation to give a student a make-up examination unless the absence
was caused by illness, religious observance or participation in
university activities at the request of its authorities. A proof of any
of the above is required in order to provide a student with a make-up
exam. Some make-up quizzes will include an extra assignment if the
instructor considers it necessary.
Take-home exams or quizzes submitted after their deadline will
have a penalty of 15% of their grade.
