Background

  • Summer and Fall 1999, ExTemplate is developed in the Language Resource Center at Rice University.
  • Spring 2000, ExTemplate 1.0 is first used by Rice faculty for language assignments.
  • Fall 2000--Work on the design and development of our online language placement tests using ExTemplate. Rice faculty continue to develop many exercises and quizzes using ExTemplate 1.0.
  • Summer 2001--First Rice online placement tests using ExTemplate hosted and administered by Rice Language Resource Center. Tests are designed by Rice CSL faculty, with content approved by ACTFL as following proficiency guidelines (French, German, and Spanish). Students take the online tests during the summer before arriving on campus.
  • Spring 2002: ExTemplate 2.0 is released and allows faculty to author and revise their own tests. Placement Tests in use include French, German, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish.
  • Summer 2003, first Chinese placement test offered to students after spring calibration. Release of ExTemplate 2.1 with new course management system included. This new version is used for Chinese language assignments for four courses in the Fall 2003. ExTemplate 1.0 continues to be used for all other language assignments.
  • Spring 2004, two French 102 courses use ExTemplate 2.1 for their on-line tests and final exams. The Language Resource Center offered two ExTemplate 2.1 workshops attended by 18 CSL faculty.
  • Fall 2004 and Spring 2005, all French 101 and 102 sections use Extemplate for homework, exams, midterms and final exams. Spanish 102 sections use it for the first time for testing.
  • Fall 2005 and Spring 2006, French 101 and 102 continue using ExTemplate for their homework, quizzes, midterms and final exams. French 201 and 202 use ExTemplate for all their assignments. Spanish 101 and 102 use ExTemplate for all their exams. Chinese 101 and 102 continue the use of ExTemplate for their listening and speaking assignments. Chinese 201, 202, 301 and 302 continue the use of ExTemplate for their assignments: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Hindi, Japanese, and Korean courses also use ExTemplate for Listening and Speaking assignments. Korean courses also use ExTemplate for some reading and writing assignments.
  • Fall 2006 and Spring 2007, The same courses continue to use ExTemplate for their assignments and exams. Additionally, Spanish 101 and 102 are now using ExTemplate for their final exams. Chinese 101 sections have begun to use ExTemplate for their quizzes.
  • Future plans: Add another question type, several assignment modules such as portfolio, and develop an export administration tool to be able to share material with other institutions or organizations using ExTemplate.
